What Gemstones !!

Thousands of years back, gemstones were classified merely based on color i.e. all red colored gemstones were Ruby. But today we know the significant differences between Ruby vs Red Spinel, though both are red.
But what exactly is a gemstone? Most of the gems are mineral such as Ruby, Topaz, Sapphire, Emerald and so on. These are formed over a million of years in the Earth’s crust and mantle, under extreme pressure and heat. There are other gemstones which come from plants or animals and are called organic such as Peral and Coral.
Let’s say, there is a person, Ragini, who wants to obtain a Ruby. The first question she should ask herself if she needs the Ruby as a piece of Jewellery or as a Jyotish / Astrological remedy. If the purpose is to obtain it as Jewellery, then it can be purchased in the similar way as she buys any other product.
But if the purpose is Jyotish, then it will be of immense benefit if she spends a few moments thinking about the journey, the Ruby has made from ‘under the Earth’ to ‘her finger’. To put it in an extremely simplified way: first R&D is made to identify gems producing areas > then mining / explosion is done to extract rocks from that area > then raw gems are extracted from those rocks using machines > raw gems are exported to factories > raw gems are cut and polished > cut and polished gems are transported to the market for sale > only after that Ragini gets to see that beautiful piece of Ruby in her finger. The moment she appreciates and acknowledges the role of nature and the efforts of numerous human beings in this chain, she accomplishes the first requirement of being humble before wearing any gemstone for Jyotish.
When we intend to obtain any gemstone as Vedic remedy, let us appreciate that gemstone as His benevolent gift to us and not as a product !!
